Larnaca port redevelopment

Cyprus is planning to modernise the Larnaca port, the country’s largest marina. Its major reconstruction will begin in 2024 and last for four years. The project will cost €1.2 billion.
Kition Ocean Holdings will carry out the work to modernise the marina for yachts and ships of various sizes. This is a Cypriot-Israeli company whose port redevelopment project was the best in an earlier competition.

How the Larnaca port redevelopment will take place

The renovation process will consist of several phases. It will start in April 2024 with the main building, which will take approximately 18 months to renovate. Once completed, it will house the offices of the management company, as well as customs and other relevant services.
Work will then move on to the buildings housing the Ministry of Agriculture and the Police Department. The cruise ship terminal building will also undergo renovation.
Reconstruction will also affect the pier: it will have new infrastructure and several service buildings. In addition, there will be a large yacht club. At the same time as these works, the project’s authors intend to repair and widen the roads and build new pedestrian walkways. This will link the Larnaca port area to the city of the same name.
The Cypriot authorities are keen to modernise the facility as it will provide employment for around 4,000 people.

What’s in store for the redeveloped Larnaca port and city

The reconstruction will significantly increase the capacity of the Larnaca marina. It will accommodate up to 650 yachts and provide repair services. As for the port itself, it will be able to handle maritime traffic of up to 450 metres in length. This category includes cruise liners, merchant and military vessels, research vessels and tankers.
The modernisation project will not only increase the port’s productivity. Larnaca town itself will become a pleasant place for locals and visitors. The project will:
– construction of residential complexes and car parks;
– shops and shopping centres;
– a hotel complex and entertainment facilities;
– a panoramic facility that will offer beautiful views of the port and the city;
– villas with swimming pools and private moorings.
According to preliminary estimates, the implementation of the significant transformation of Larnaca Port will bring about €12 billion per year to the local economy. In addition, the project will make life much more comfortable for citizens and open up new employment opportunities. At the same time, the new facilities in Larnaca will attract more tourists.
